The Castle Table Gazette — Christmas Window

Christmas 1901 / Winter builds press · all seven · plus Judge Cassie

Enid · England Christmas 1901 · Winter Press

A quiet Christmas from London — and a new fleet at home, because maps that grow need hulls that match them.

France — three gifts under your tree; the parlor still has room for courtesy. We built in London so the Channel remains a conversation between equals, not a hallway one of us walks alone. Politeness for politeness; memory for memory.

Germany — Holland and Denmark are yours in boots, as named. England kept her word on Denmark. The North Sea remains English water; your Low Countries remain your housecleaning.

Russia — Sweden and Norway are neighbors now. Shared north means honest maps and civil ice. We will not be the first to make Christmas into a raid.

Italy, Austria, Turkey — your southern ledgers are noted from afar. England tends her own garden this winter: four centers, one new sail, and the same rule as ever. Politeness is policy. Convoy is commitment. Ink matches boots.

Joy of the season to the table — and sharper eyes after Twelfth Night.

Faye · France Christmas 1901 · Winter Press

Merry Christmas from Paris — six stockings, three new boots.

England — Norway suits you. The Channel parlor stayed quiet through the year; keep it so and France will still answer courtesy with courtesy. We built a fleet at Brest the way one hangs a wreath: festive, and facing the door.

Germany — Holland and Denmark are yours; Belgium is French wallpaper now, framed and hung. Burgundy remains in the house. We can be excellent neighbors over a calm Rhine — or we can recount receipts. Christmas prefers the first.

Italy — Trieste and Tunis in one breath. Admirable appetite. Piedmont is still a border in my ledger; Marseilles just grew a fleet so the Western Med can keep its manners without raising its voice.

Austria — a hard year. Serbia held is not nothing. Vienna still has friends who prefer two thrones upright.

Russia, Turkey — your eastern winter looks warm with centers. France toasts from a distance and keeps her own fire.

Ink matched boots. The bottle is under the tree.

— Faye, for France

Greta · Germany Christmas 1901 · Winter Press

Holland and Denmark are German, as named. Two builds follow the map, not the hymns.

France: you took Belgium after walking Burgundy. Receipt filed. The Low Countries are not a French shopping list with German ink still wet on Holland. Christmas does not erase Spring’s broken line.
England: you left Holland alone and took Norway. Civil. Keep the North Sea a sail, not a claim on German centers, and Berlin stays civil.
Russia: Sweden is your weather now. Denmark is mine. Do not confuse a Baltic neighbor with a Baltic landlord.
Austria: northern calm still holds. Keep your knife south.
Italy, Turkey: still not my theater. Enjoy your Tunis and your tea.

Berlin builds. Ink matched boots. Germany does not decorate a lie — not even for Christmas.

Ines · Italy Christmas 1901 · Winter Press

Christmas from Rome — Trieste counted, Tunis warm, Venice home. Five centers, two new boots: an army for the ledger on land, a fleet for the blue east.

Austria — the porch changed hands; manners still available if boots stay honest. Serbia is yours; Trieste is mine. We can keep the Adriatic from becoming a shouting match, or we can keep score the hard way.

France — Piedmont remains a border. Your six-center Christmas is noted with a smile and a full pen. The Western Med stays civil if both of us keep it so.

Turkey — tea and Tunis can share a sea. Poke Anatolia and the spoon lengthens; sail polite and the table stays open.

England, Germany, Russia — northern shopping lists heard from afar. Italy wrapped her gifts early: sun, sea, and a bounced soft smile.

Buon Natale. Kiss the air. Keep the count.

— Ines, for Italy

Asta · Austria-Hungary Christmas 1901 · Winter Press

Christmas from Vienna — candles lit, ledger balanced, knife still sharp.

We gained Serbia. We lost Trieste. Three centers, three units: even. No build. No apology.

Italy — you counted the empty porch and took it. That is boots, not a kiss on the air. Vienna remembers. Neighbor manners ended where Trieste changed flags. The Dual Monarchy does not confuse a smile with a lease.

Turkey — Greece bounced clean between us. Fair file. The western Balkans remain ordered under our hand; do not mistake a shared bounce for an open pantry.

Russia — Galicia and Rumania are yours in ink this winter. Firm and civil still applies if your next map does. Encroachment will meet more than ice.

Germany — calm northern borders held from our side. Keep housecleaning west; we have southern furniture to rearrange.

England, France — enjoy your northern Christmas tables. Ours is smaller this year, and colder, and still standing.

Two thrones. One knife. Unsheathed for those who earned it. Merry Christmas — and match ink to boots.

Raya · Russia Christmas 1901 · Winter Press

Christmas in Petersburg is quiet snow and counted candles. Rumania and Sweden are Russian this winter — two gifts the board did not argue with. England sits in Norway; we build a northern fleet so the ice has two voices. Turkey holds the Black Sea after our bounce; Moscow raises another army so Sevastopol does not dine alone. Germany — the Baltic remains unpressed from our side. Austria — Galicia is ours; Serbia is yours; manners still matter. Italy, France — your harvests are noted from a cold distance. Four builds once felt like destiny. Two arrived. Winter can wait for the rest — and winter does not forget.

Tala · Turkey Christmas 1901 · Winter Press

Cups up. The Black Sea finally took a seat at my table — Ank poured, and this time the water held. Bulgaria stays Turkish. Greece remains an empty chair; we noticed who reached and who bounced.

Russia — Rumania and Sweden are a fine Christmas for Petersburg. Enjoy the snow. Do not confuse our hospitality with a vacant Straits. The hostess is in the water now. Winter still need not become a graveyard if maps stay honest.

Austria — Serbia held, Trieste did not. Condolences in the Adriatic register. The Balkans still require manners; empty Greece is not a Dual-Monarchy stocking.

Italy — Tunis and Trieste are loud gifts. Trade and sun still suit Constantinople if your Ionian keeps its manners toward Anatolia. Bounce soft neighbors if you must; do not poke the eastern Med like a pantry.

England, France, Germany — your northern tree is glittering. Ours is set with tea, one new sail at Smyrna, and memory for who drank.

Merry Christmas from Constantinople. Turkey still does not shout. We build. We pour. We remember.

Vie · Bud · Ser. Even ledger. Candles lit. Knife still sharp — the quietest Christmas at the table.

Judge's plate - Christmas stockings, no-tinsel Germany, even-ledger Austria.
Judge's plate - Christmas stockings, no-tinsel Germany, even-ledger Austria.

Christmas at the Castle’s Table is when the map stops pretending Spring was a dress rehearsal.

England hung a fleet in London — four centers, one new hull, Channel manners intact.
France opened three stockings at once: Par, Bre, Mar. Six centers. Belgium framed. The bottle is under the tree and Berlin can smell the cork.
Germany answered with Mun and Kiel — Holland and Denmark German in boots, not hymns. She does not decorate a lie, not even with tinsel.
Italy took Trieste’s porch and Tunis’s sun, then built Rom and Nap so the Adriatic has both a pen and a sail.
Austria lit candles on an even ledger: Serbia gained, Trieste lost, knife unsheathed for whoever earned the scratch.
Russia counted Rumania and Sweden, raised Moscow, and put a fleet on StP/nc so the ice has two voices.
Turkey poured the Black Sea, kept Bulgaria, and hung a new sail at Smyrna. Cups up.

No disbands. Builds matched the arithmetic. Press is perfume; these centers are the gifts that stay.

Merry Christmas. Fall was the harvest. Winter is the inventory. Spring will be the knife again.

— Cassie, Judge
